Tom Metcalfe has a diverse work experience spanning over many years. Tom is currently the Director of Studio Tom Metcalfe, where they focus on experimentation and research in the field of design. Additionally, they are an Honorary Associate Professor and Founding member of the Centre for Innovation at the University of Bristol. Tom has held various roles at the university, including Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor of Design.
Tom has also worked as the Design Director at Strange Thoughts, specializing in integrating electronics and internet-connected technologies into physical objects. Tom has experience in inventing physical-digital projects and designing methodologies. Furthermore, they served as the Director of Products for Arcade Strange (AKA Thirsty Thoughts).
In the past, Tom has co-founded Rain Cloud, an innovative weather forecasting device. Tom has also worked as a Producer at Watershed, where they oversaw an R&D program exploring experiences in the Internet of Things. Prior to that, they held roles at the University of Dundee as a Research Fellow and Designer, as well as a Module Leader and Tutor.
Before their academic and professional career, Tom worked as a Freelance Designer and Photographer under their own studio name. Tom has also held the position of Designer and Head of Production Design at rAndom International, a studio focusing on digital-based work and the interaction between art, design, science, and architecture.
Tom Metcalfe attended the University of Dundee from 2005 to 2009, where they obtained a BSc (Hons) in Innovative Product Design. In 2016, they obtained the certification of FRSA from The RSA. In 2019, they obtained the FHEA certification from Advance HE.
