Robert H. Gorlin

Mr. Gorlin is retired from his many positions at Guardian Industries Corp., which he joined in 1989. He was Director and Chairman of the Governance Committee from 2009 to 2012, a member of the Leadership and Succession Planning Committee from 2009 to 2012, Vice-President and Special Counsel from 2007 to 2009, and Vice-President and General Counsel from 1989 to 2007. From 1984 to 1989, he was a partner at Dykema Gossett Law Firm, principally specializing in antitrust and trade regulation, complex commercial litigation and administrative law; prior to that he had been an associate with the firm since 1977. He received his BA from Brooklyn College, his PhD from the University of Michigan and the JD magna cum laude from the University of Michigan in 1977; he was editor-in-chief of the Michigan Law Review from 1976 to 1977. A member of the Dean's Advisory Council, University of Michigan Law School, from 2010 to 2013, he is former Chair of the Executive Committee of the Michigan Members of the Stratford Festival; Chair of the Stratford Festival of America; Vice-Chair, Human Resources Committee of the Board of Directors, Detroit Institute of Arts; and a member of the Board of Directors of European Painting Council, and Honorary Member of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Institute of Arts. His interests include travel, theatre and collecting Inuit art, antique maps and books about exploration, and he follows most college and professional sports. Mr. Gorlin joined the Festival's Board in March 2015 and was appointed Vice-Chair in March 2020 and 2021; in March 2022 he was elected Chair of the Board of Governors and will serve on all board committees. He has served on and chaired the Governance committee and Advancement committee and has served on the TPT Building committee.
