Stuttering Treatment and Research Trust (START)

Approximately 1% of the population stutters, that’s over 45,000 people in New Zealand. Established in 1995 and based in Auckland, START is the ONLY organisation in NZ that specialises in providing specialist treatment and support to people of all ages who stutter and their families. With many therapy options available, we have the advice and support that you need. Stuttering is most effectively treated in early childhood, so it is important not to assume that all children will ‘grow out of it’. Treatment for school aged children involves helping them to become confident communicators and to limit the social impact stuttering has on their lives. Effective treatment is also available for young people and adults who stutter. Through therapy and support, people who stutter can learn to communicate effectively and subsequently gain the confidence to participate more fully in every area of their lives. Our qualified team of specialist Speech Language Therapists are all members of the New Zealand Speech Therapy Association (NZSTA) and provide internationally accepted and effective treatment for people who stutter. START offers both individual sessions (either face-to-face or via Skype) and courses for a range of age groups. We also provide mentoring for adults who stutter and a community of support for people who stutter and their families. We work to raise awareness and tolerance of stuttering in the wider community with a goal of NZ becoming more knowledgeable and accepting of people who stutter. Our research and collaboration with some of New Zealand’s top Universities makes START a centre of excellence for the treatment and support of people who stutter. Our ability to make a difference in the lives of people who stutter is thanks to the generous support of our community and friends. You can make a difference to these lives too.
