Prior to this role, Donald worked at ICI, Zenaca, and Avecia from January 1988 to May 2005, where responsibilities included Research Scientist, Business Development, and Market Analyst. Donald holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Organic Chemistry from the University of Glasgow and completed education at Ardrossan Academy.
