Job description

Purpose

To provide the Plant and the Maintenance team with a high level of Power Engineering expertise, and Supervision that ensures company objectives are supported, maintenance goals are efficiently, and effectively met, and departmental downtime goals and preventative maintenance schedules are achieved. To carry out equipment and building repairs as required, while adhering to quality, safety, food safety, and legislative standards and guidelines.

Job Functions /Responsibilities:

  • Maintains stationary mechanical equipment, such as steam boilers and ammonia refrigeration plants.
  • Provide utilities, heating, and cooling for buildings and Industrial processes.
  • Read meters and gauges and/or automatic recording devices at hourly intervals to verify operating conditions.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and perform immediate repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Overhaul and install new equipment.
  • Records data, such as temperature of equipment, hours of operation, fuel consumed temperature or pressure, water levels, and chemical levels.
  • Adjust manual controls or override automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or shut down equipment.
  • Visually inspect equipment at hourly intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
  • Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, and replacing packing glands, gaskets, valves, recorders, and gauges.
  • May perform water titration tests and pour chemical additives such as water softener into the treatment tank to prevent scale build-up and to clean boiler lines.
  • Record operation and maintenance actions taken during shift operator’s logbook.
  • Maintains a safe and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards, and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Perform routine maintenance work on machinery.
  • Generates parts requests to ensure adequate inventory.
  • Complete work orders as assigned by the lead hands, supervisors, and Maintenance Manager
  • Perform general housekeeping in the maintenance department and maintain the cleanliness of the shops, etc.
  • Operate and maintain effluent treatment plant when required.
  • Pump and maintain cooking oil storage.
  • Perform other duties as required, such as: pumping oil, cooking oil management, routine maintenance of effluent treatment plant, etc.
  • Have full knowledge of the Emergency Response Plan to deal with all emergencies and security threats in a systematic and organized manner as per Grand River Foods Emergency Response Plan.
  • Check and verify the proper functionality of the Fire Alarm system and perform the Maintenance checklist when applicable.
  • Able to perform repair, replacement, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting in the following items: tubing, fittings and air supply, pressure devices, level switch, temperature sensor, flow meters, regulators and valves, machinery lubrication, alignment of machinery, power drives, identifying machine components, water pumps, pneumatic systems, hydraulic system, vacuum systems, fans, and blowers, select pipes, valves and fittings, control system (sensor, limit switch, PLC reading input/output feedback), compressors, all filters, belts, bearings, gearbox, chains, welding.
  • Microsoft Excel: Create a spreadsheet, print, etc.
  • Microsoft Word: Know how to write a report, create PDFs, attach pictures, format the file, print, etc.
  • CMMS System: create work orders, update the system, close work orders, etc
  • Email: create and manage emails.
  • Perform any other task as assigned by the Lead Hand/ Supervisor and or manager.

Qualification:

  • Completion and Possession of a 4th class or higher Power Engineering (general program) certification.
  • Having 3-5 years of experience in a similar job is an asset
  • Previous Leadership/management experience/education
  • Able to work flexible shifts.
  • Ability to read blueprints and draw schematics of machinery.
  • Ability to follow OEM specifications and schematics (hydraulic, pneumatic).
  • Previous PLC knowledge is an asset.
  • Mechanically inclined and have manual dexterity required for operating machinery and computers.
  • Able to pass a fit test mask and TRST supplied by the Company.
  • Experience in a Food Processing & Cooking Meat Facility is an asset.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend English.

  • Be able to work independently, as well as being a strong team player.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Have a good attendance and safety record.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a team member
