Peter McCoy has a work experience that spans over several years. Peter started their career as a Lecturer at Northwestern University in 1994 and worked there until 1996. After that, they worked as an Assistant Professor at UMASS Lowell from 1998 to 2000. Currently, they are an Associate Professor at SUNY Potsdam since 2000.

Peter McCoy has an extensive educational background in music education. Peter obtained a Bachelor of Music Education (BM) from Iowa State University, where they studied from 1980 to 1985. Peter later pursued a Master's degree (MM) in Music Education at Northwestern University, attending from 1987 to 1990. Peter McCoy's academic journey culminated in a Ph.D. in Music Education from Northwestern University, which they completed from 1993 to 1999.
