Steve Emberton has a diverse work experience in the field of law enforcement and criminal justice. Steve currently works as an Adjunct Faculty at Aurora University, teaching Criminal Justice. Prior to this, they were the Law Enforcement Manager at Suspect Technologies, where they utilized AI technology to enhance video analytics for law enforcement agencies. Steve also held the position of Law Enforcement Liaison at Absolute Software, where they assisted police agencies in investigations involving stolen mobile devices. Steve Emberton has hands-on experience as a police officer, having served at Warrenville Police for five years. Steve also had a long and successful career with the Illinois State Police, where they held various positions including Trooper, Sergeant, and Master Sergeant. During their time with the Illinois State Police, they also served as Police Legal Counsel, handling litigation and legal matters, and drafting legislation and administrative charges. Steve Emberton retired from the Illinois State Police in 2006.

Steve Emberton attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 1972 to 1976, earning a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Finance, General. Following this, they pursued their Juris Doctor degree in Law at the Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, from 1977 to 1980. In January 1980, they obtained the certification of "Attorney at Law" from the ARDC: Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois. Subsequently, in 1980-1981, they attended the Illinois State Police Academy, acquiring a Certification in Law Enforcement.
