Swords to Plowshares
Pauline Lubens, PhD, MPH, currently serves as a Policy Analyst at Swords to Plowshares since August 2019, focusing on veteran health research and best practices for community stakeholders, with a specific emphasis on aging veterans. Additionally, Pauline has been a part-time lecturer in the Veterans Studies Certificate Program at UC Irvine since September 2022 and teaches "War and Public Health" at the University of California, Berkeley's School of Public Health since May 2020. Previous experience includes academic positions at Santa Clara University and UC Irvine, project management at UCLA, and various roles in photojournalism at San Jose Mercury News and Detroit Free Press, covering significant global issues such as the impact of war on communities. Pauline holds a PhD in Global Health from UC Irvine, a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.

For over 45 years, Swords to Plowshares has provided direct services for low-income, homeless, and at-risk San Francisco Bay Area veterans regardless of era of service or discharge status. They are one of the few organizations in the country that provide free legal consultation and attorney representation to veterans seeking assistance with the Department of Veterans Affairs benefits and military discharge upgrade cases.
