Michael Kyes has a diverse work experience in the architecture and design industry. Michael started their career at Bergmeyer Associates, where they worked as a Project Manager and Designer on various projects, including retail, commercial interiors, multifamily, and academic housing. During this time, they also served as the Co-Director of "AFFINITIES," an office-wide design education and research initiative.
In 2009, Michael founded their own architecture firm, Kyesdesign Architecture, specializing in residential, workplace renovation, educational, and student life design. Michael was particularly interested in utilizing BIM-enabled workflows.
Michael then joined Bruner/Cott Architects and Planners as a Senior Project Manager for a brief period.
In 2010, Michael joined the Boston Architectural College as a Practice Examiner and Special Projects Advisor. Michael reviewed student portfolios and discussed career development strategies in the BAC practice curriculum. Michael also worked on the Gateway Program, providing project-based learning opportunities for students in collaboration with local non-profits and neighborhood groups.
During their time at KlingStubbins from 2011 to 2014, Michael served as an Architect, Project Manager, Digital Design Coordinator, and a member of the multi-office BIM Steering Committee. Michael was known for advocating for the use of the latest tools and techniques to bring innovative solutions to each project.
From 2014 to 2015, Michael worked at Jacobs as an Architect and Digital Design Coordinator. Michael led the research and implementation of digital tools and processes, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and creativity.
In 2014, they also started their involvement with the Boston Society for Architecture, initially as the Co-Chair of the BSA BIM Roundtable, promoting collaboration and innovation in Building Information Modeling. Later, they became the Founder and Co-Chair of the Design Visualization knowledge community, focusing on novel architectural design processes.
Since 2015, Michael has been working at SMMA | Symmes Maini & McKee Associates as the Architecture Team Leader. In this role, they foster a culture of design excellence and teamwork within the Architecture department. Michael integrates with other engineering and specialty departments to support the firm's multi-disciplinary collaborative mission while utilizing data-driven design, project team collaboration, and lean project delivery.
In addition to their professional work, Michael has been involved with the Open Architecture Collaborative as a Co-Director, volunteering to provide architectural solutions to humanitarian crises and offering pro-bono design and planning services to communities in need. Michael has worked on projects in the Boston area, Nepal, Madagascar, and Haiti.
Throughout their career, Michael has demonstrated a commitment to collaboration, innovation, and leveraging technology to advance the field of architecture and design.
Michael Kyes earned a Bachelor of Architecture (B-Arch) degree from the Wentworth Institute of Technology, where they studied from 1987 to 1991. Michael pursued further education in hotel design and development at the Harvard Design School for a year in 2000. In addition, they undertook continuing education courses in architecture at the Boston Architectural College from 1991 to 1993. As part of a Western European study abroad program, they attended the Societa Dante Alighiere in 1990.
