Synapse Energy Economics
Melissa Whited has a strong background in energy economics. Melissa is currently working at Synapse Energy Economics as the Vice President since April 2023. Prior to this role, they held positions as a Senior Principal, Principal Associate, Senior Associate, and Associate within the same company. Melissa also has experience as a Teaching Assistant in Environmental Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from August 2011 to May 2012. Additionally, they worked as a Water Policy Intern at the Wisconsin Public Service Commission in 2009, where they developed a model prototype for calculating water conservation costs and analyzed conservation strategies. Earlier in their career, Melissa held positions as a Communications Manager at Synapse Energy Economics from July 2005 to August 2008, as well as a Program Associate at the National Council for International Visitors from 2003 to 2005. Melissa also interned at the ACLU of Eastern Missouri in 2002.
Melissa Whited has a strong educational background with a focus on social sciences and economics. In 1999, they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies from Southwestern University. Melissa further expanded their knowledge in the field by completing a study abroad program in International Politics at DIS - Study Abroad in 2001. In 2002, they also attended the School for International Training to gain a deeper understanding of International/Global Studies. Melissa then pursued graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they obtained a Master of Science degree in Environment and Resources between 2008 and 2010. Melissa continued their education at the same university and acquired a Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics from 2010 to 2012.

The firm was founded in May 1996 to specialize in consulting on energy, economic, and environmental topics. Synapse assesses the implications of electricity industry planning, regulation and restructuring. Our work covers various interrelated issues such as transmission planning, service reliability, siting, fuel diversity, resource planning, financial and economic risks, renewable energy potential and renewable portfolio standards, energy efficiency, electricity modeling, portfolio management, customer service and more.
