Kahlil Baker, PhD

Kahlil Baker, PhD has extensive experience in the field of environmental sustainability and natural resources. Kahlil Baker, began their career at Greenpeace as a Fundraiser in 2000 and later worked as a Tree Planter at Brinkman & Associates Reforestation from 2002 to 2005. Kahlil also gained experience as a Tree Planter at Celtic Reforestation from 2005 to 2007. In 2007, they founded Taking Root, a company that strives to enable smallholder farmers to grow trees and earn money from carbon removal. As the Chief Executive Officer of Taking Root, Kahlil has been responsible for providing technology and support to reforestation partners to create transparent and robust forest carbon removals.

In addition to their work at Taking Root, Kahlil has held various advisory roles. Kahlil Baker, served as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee at Plan Vivo Foundation starting in 2017. From 2013 to 2014, they were part of the Climate Smart Agriculture Advisory Panel at The Gold Standard Foundation. Kahlil has also worked as an Independent Consultant, specializing in natural resources, from 2010 to 2014.

Early in their career, Kahlil gained experience as a Tour Guide/Cultural Facilitator at Costa Rican Adventures in 2004 and as a Fundraiser for Greenpeace from 2000 to 2001. Overall, their work experience reflects a strong commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable practices in the agricultural sector.

Kahlil Baker, Ph.D., has a strong educational background in the field of forest economics and development. Kahlil Baker, obtained their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) cum laude in Economics from Concordia University in 2008. Later on, they pursued a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Forestry at The University of British Columbia from 2010 to 2012. Building on their previous education, they then completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Forest Economics and Development from The University of British Columbia, where they studied from 2012 to 2017.
