Alex Thornton's work experience begins in 2009 as a Sailing Instructor at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, where they taught junior learn-to-sail courses. In 2010, they joined University Theatres UWA and took on various roles, eventually becoming the Front of House Manager. In 2013, they participated in the Vacation Student program at BP, working on different Process Engineering projects. They then secured a role at BP as a Graduate Process Engineer, providing technical support for the Diesel Hydrotreaters. In 2014, they became a LEAP Coach at The LEAP Foundation, a non-profit leadership program. They continued their career at BP as a Process Engineer, focusing on unit support for the Diesel Hydrotreating units. In 2019, they joined Boston Consulting Group as a Consultant, later becoming a Project Leader. Their most recent experience is with Tattarang as part of the Portfolio Operations team, starting in 2023.

Alex Thornton completed their high school education from St Mary's Anglican Girls' School between 2004 and 2008. They then pursued a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and Arts from The University of Western Australia, specializing in Chemical and Process Engineering and Italian.
