Dr. Cheryl Koopman was the Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Emerita at Stanford University. She wrote numerous publications focused on psychological consequences of highly stressful events and on evaluating the effects of educational and mental health interventions. Her research emphasized HIV-related attitudes, risk behavior, and quality of life among gay and runaway adolescents, HIV-positive men and women, and others in numerous countries, including India, China, Haiti, Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, and Malawi. She held a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Virginia.
