Karl Benson hails from Spokane, Washington. Benson was a student-athlete, playing baseball for both Spokane Community College and Boise State University. He worked for the NCAA and was rapidly promoted to Director of Championships, where 68 NCAA championships took place under his tenure. He went on to serve as the commissioner of the Mid-American Conference and then further polished his reputation for accomplishment in the Western Athletic Conference. Benson oversaw the participation of numerous teams in the Bowl Championship Series. As commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference Benson has revamped the brand to reflect optimism and excellence.
