Dr. Mark Smith became a member of our board of directors in 2018.
He is a professor of clinical medicine at the University of California at San Francisco as well as a visiting professor at the School of Public Health at UC Berkeley. He is a board-certified internist and maintains a clinical practice in HIV care at San Francisco General Hospital. A nationally recognized care delivery and health policy expert, Dr. Smith is current co-chair of the Guiding Committee of the Health Care Payment Learning & Action Network, a public-private partnership launched by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The group promotes the transition to value-based payment to improve care quality while lowering costs.
From 1996 through 2013 he served as the founding president and CEO of the California Health Care Foundation, an independently endowed philanthropy that works to improve healthcare access and quality for Californians. He helped build the foundation into a recognized leader in delivery system innovation, public reporting of care quality, and applications of new technology in healthcare.
Dr. Smith was formerly executive vice-president of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine and chaired the IOM’s Committee on The Learning Health Care System in America. He serves on the boards of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Commonwealth Fund and is on the editorial board of Health Affairs. He received his BA from Harvard College, his MD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
