Director of Hawaii Forestry Operations at Terraformation

M. Johannes S. has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. Their most recent position was as the Director of Hawaii Forestry Operations at Terraformation, where they supported Hawai'i in becoming a world leader in ecosystems restoration, food forests, and sustainability to address climate change. Prior to this role, M. Johannes S. worked as a Project Manager and Restoration Manager at Terraformation.

Before joining Terraformation, M. Johannes S. founded CarbonBuddy - Your friend to tackle climate change!, where they developed tools to empower individuals to understand and reduce their carbon footprint, as well as support activities that mitigate future emissions or sequester carbon.

Earlier in their career, M. Johannes S. served as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Landscape Architecture at the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf, working on landscape planning research projects focused on renewable energy. They also gained experience as an Environmental Specialist with the Federal State of Bavaria, where they prepared statements for authorization processes and ensured compliance with statutory requirements. Their earliest role was as an Apprentice with the City of Selb.

M. Johannes S. obtained a Diplom Engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in Sustainable Resource Management (Forestry and Agriculture) from the Technical University of Munich, where they studied from 2013 to 2017. Prior to that, they attended the University of Applied Sciences Weihenstephan-Triesdorf from 2006 to 2011, where they earned another Diplom Engineer (Dipl.-Ing.) (FH) degree in Landscape Planning. In 2009, they also briefly studied Landscape Architecture at Häme University of Applied Sciences, HAMK.

In addition to their educational background, M. Johannes S. has also obtained several certifications. M. Johannes completed the Hawaii County Entrepreneurship Program - Cohort II in April 2017 through Eliademy. In May 2016, they completed the Beginning farmer rancher training program offered by The Kohala Center. Looking ahead, they plan to become a Certified Carbon Auditing Professional (CAP) through the Association of Energy Engineers by May 2023, and they have already achieved the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification from the same institution in April 2020.
