Prior roles include attorney at law at Wright & Greenhill, focusing on civil rights claims and employment matters, and Assistant Attorney General in civil litigation for important state entities. Additionally, Mike Thompson Jr. acted as a Special Prosecutor for the State Bar of Texas and contributed legal opinion pieces for Texas Lawyer. Academic credentials include a JD from Texas Tech University School of Law and a BA in Government from The University of Texas at Austin.

The Texas Association of Counties was established in 1969 to provide services to Texas counties and to promote the value of county government statewide.
