Michal Hocek

Council Member at The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic

Michal Hocek is the head of the research group at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the ASCR, the professor of organic chemistry at the Faculty of Science, Charles University and the head of the Joint Laboratory of Bioorganic and Medicinal Nucleic Acid Chemistry, IOCB and Charles University. He is the tutor of many Ph.D. students (33 successful Ph.D. graduates and currently 20 doctoral students) and a number of postdoctoral interns from more than 15 countries.

Scientific group Prof. Hocka deals with bioorganic and medicinal chemistry of nucleic acids and their components. In the field of medicinal chemistry, it develops new nucleosides and nucleotides with cytostatic and antiviral activity and studies their mechanism of action. In bioorganic chemistry, he develops syntheses of new labeled and modified nucleotides and investigates enzymatic methods for the synthesis of modified nucleic acids and their applications in diagnostics and chemical biology.
