Pavel Baran

Chairman of the Scientific Council at The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic

After completing his studies in philosophy and history at Masaryk University in Brno, he completed an internal postgraduate study at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology in Prague. As part of his work at the Academy of Sciences, he participated in the renewal of the activities of the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, in the position of Deputy Director. In the years 2005–2013, he held the position of director of this institute.

Since 2013, he has been a member of the Academic Council and Vice-Chairman of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in the field of social sciences and humanities. In 2014, he was appointed a member of the Council for Research, Development and Innovation, and in September 2016, he was elected its Vice-Chairman. He was and is a member of a number of professional and advisory bodies of the Government of the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, the Research, Development and Innovation Council, the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic and the Academy of Sciences. , development and innovation, member of the Coordinating Council of Experts for the Preparation of National Priorities for Research, Experimental Development and Innovation, member of the Expert Commission for Social Sciences and Humanities of the Council for Research, Development and Innovation, member of the subcommittee of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic and member of the Economic Council of the Academy of Sciences. He has also worked and continues to work on the scientific boards of universities and their joint workplaces. He has long been dealing with the issue of science policy in the Czech Republic, at various levels advocating for the appropriate position of science and research in public policies (including in cooperation with the Parliament of the Czech Republic).

His professional interests include, in particular, the history of philosophy, moral and political philosophy, philosophy in the Czech lands of the 20th century, the philosophy of values ​​and the philosophy of history. He was engaged in the translation of professional literature as well as pedagogical activities at the University of Economics in Prague and the University of Ostrava. He is currently lecturing on selected philosophy courses at Masaryk University in Brno.
