Prof. In the years 1992–1998, Newerkla studied Slavic Studies, English and American Studies mainly at the University of Vienna, where he successfully defended his dissertation on diglossia in the Czech education system on the example of the West Bohemian city of Plzeň in 1740–1918. He received his habilitation in 2003 on language contacts between Czech, Slovak and German and the etymological and documentary dictionary of German borrowings in Czech and Slovak, and in the same year he won a competition as a professor of West Slavic linguistics at the Viennese Slavic Studies, to which he was called in March 2004. Since then, he has been guaranteeing linguistic education at the University of Vienna as part of his studies of West Slovak languages, with Czech studies in a broader context at the forefront of his scientific work.
He has written and published several books and more than 110 scientific articles, collaborated on a Czech textbook and exercise book and other scientific books, led several scientific grants, and currently guarantees two scientific projects in the large scientific project of SFB German in Austria. He is a correspondent member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, an external member of the Academic Assembly of the ASCR, a member of the Board of the Danube and Central Europe Institute (IDM), the governing body of the bilateral historians on the common cultural heritage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Austrian Ministry of European and International Affairs (BMEIA). He is also a member of several professional journal boards, including Czech magazines Czech Literature, Journal of Modern Philology, Linguistica Brunensia, Word and Meaning, Studies in Applied Linguistics (SALi), Philological Letters and Word and Literature. He works as an assessor for several grant agencies (GA CR, DFG, SNF, VEGA,…) and the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
