Michael Alter has led Alter for more than 24 years. During that time, the company has ascended from a strong regional developers to one of the country’s Top 5 developers, honored by NAIOP as the National Developer of the Year.
Under Michael’s stewardship, Alter launched a suite of new companies including Alter+Care, one of the nation’s leading healthcare real estate development firms; Alter Asset Management, a property-management firm; and EnTrust Realty Advisors, an MBE real estate investment advisory and tenant representation firm.
A Chicago native, Michael was previously a clerk for William J. Bauer, former Chief Judge of the Seventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and a practicing attorney with Mayer Brown & Platt.
In addition to his career in real estate, Michael is committed to a number of social and nonprofit endeavors. Michael founded and is a Board Member of City Year Chicago. This unique national service organization unites young people from diverse backgrounds, ages 17 – 24, for a demanding year of full-time community service and leadership development. He is also a Board member of Be The Change Inc., a non-profit dedicated to organizing campaigns to create opportunity, empower veterans and promote national service; a Trustee of Robert Morris University of Chicago; and the Board Chair of LEAP Innovations, the new leading non-profit connecting innovation and education.
Most recently, Michael has been committed to the advancement of opportunities for women in professional athletics. In 2005, he brought the WNBA to Chicago as the Principal Owner of the Chicago Sky. The Sky clinched their first playoff berth in team history on August 23, 2013 and their first WNBA Finals appearance on September 3, 2014.
Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Harvard University; a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Chicago; and an Honorary Degree from Knox College.
