Law Graduate, Criminal Defense Practice at The Bronx Defenders

Joanne Woo Ri Choi (she/her/hers) received her J.D. from Columbia Law School. Prior to joining the Bronx Defenders, Joanne was the Herbert and Nell Singer Social Justice Fellow at the Racial Justice Program of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). At the ACLU, she litigated complex civil rights cases challenging the criminalization of poverty as well as inequitable barriers to education. While in law school, Joanne was part of the Challenging the Consequences of Mass Incarceration Clinic, where she represented a client in a civil rights case for constitutional violations arising out of Rikers Island and, with clinic partners, successfully conducted a jury trial in federal district court, where the jury returned a verdict of $1.5 million against the City of New York Department of Corrections. During law school, she interned at the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York and Still She Rises in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Prior to law school, Joanne was a management consultant in San Francisco and worked in strategy and operations at LinkedIn. She holds a Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.
