Carla Suber

Carla Suber is currently a Team Clinician with the Chicago Bears. Prior to that, they were a Clinical Counselor/Social Worker with Loyola University Chicago from August 2018 to June 2020. Before that, they were an Assistant Director, Academic Services- Division of Intercollegiate Athletics with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from May 2006 to July 2018. In that role, they were responsible for the oversight and supervision of 3 full-time learning specialists and providing professional support and guidance under the regulations of NCAA, Big Ten Conference and institutional policies. Carla also conducted a critical review of all academic support plans for student-athletes diagnosed with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, or those deemed academically underprepared and taught compensatory techniques to help understand their learning strengths and weaknesses to foster academic success. Additionally, they collaborated with campus partners to establish academic success programs for at-risk student-athletes and served as the DIA Irwin Academic Services liaison for the University of Illinois Counseling Center and Division of Rehabilitation and Educational Services (DRES). Carla is proficient with 504 plans and individualized education plans (IEP) and conducts the initial assessment to ascertain students’ academic and developmental needs, including psycho-educational testing. Carla also provides social and emotional preliminary psychotherapy for student athletes, assists with development and delivery of learning strategy programming, develops and manages the strategic tutor program for academically at-risk students, including the hiring, training, and supervision of the graduate staff. Additional responsibilities include coordinating summer screenings, recommending technology and software to support student learning, and facilitating workshops within the Student Athlete Development Program.

Ms. Suber earned their M.S.Ed. in Secondary Education from the University of Pennsylvania, their M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology from Temple University, and their BA in English from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Carla is also certified by the State of Illinois as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).
