- James P. Mertz
Oversees the family farming operation founded in 1914 by his wife's (Kathy) grandfather, now in the 5th generation of family participation as growers, packers, sellers, and shippers of fresh fruits and vegetables, plus general farming operations. Jim's career began in education before shifting to Symms Fruit Ranch in 1971. He has been actively involved in the local agricultural community since arriving, including serving on the Idaho Horticulture Association, the Idaho Apple Commission, the Idaho Cherry Commission and the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association, among others. Jim earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1961 from Beloit College in Beloit, WI, and his Master’s degree from Columbia University in 1965.

The College of Idaho
Founded in 1891, The College of Idaho is the state’s oldest private liberal arts college and offers more than 80 areas of study to 1,100 undergraduate students. It has a century-old tradition of educating some of the most accomplished graduates in Idaho, including seven Rhodes Scholars, three Marshall Scholars, and another 11 Truman and Goldwater Scholars. The College is located on a beautiful campus in Caldwell, Idaho. Its distinctive PEAK curriculum challenges students to attain competencies in the four knowledge peaks of the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences and a professional field, enabling them to graduate with an academic major and three minors in four years.
