David Conde

Dr. David Conde was born in South Texas to a family that became migrant laborers when he was very young. The family traveled across the country to work in the fields in such states as Arkansas, Ohio, Michigan, Missouri, and Colorado. He was raised in Denver, Colorado, and left high school in the tenth grade at the age of seventeen to join the United States Air Force. While in Basic Training he successfully tested for high school equivalency and college credits. Conde was posted to Germany where he entered the University of Maryland Extension in Wiesbaden as a Junior. After military service, he attended the University of Denver and the University of Northern Colorado where he obtained his baccalaureate degree. He completed graduate work and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas.

Dr. Conde has been a professor of Spanish and Portuguese, a Professor of education and a college administrator at Colorado State University at Pueblo where his group received the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) Award for Distinguished Achievement in 1973, New Mexico Highlands University where he taught and led the organization of the First National Symposium on Chicano Literature and Critical Analysis, Metropolitan State University at Denver where he taught and served in a variety of administrative capacities including Associate Dean, Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, Department Chair and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs. He went on to East Carolina University where he served as Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Special Initiatives and Special Assistant to Latino Affairs. He left East Carolina University to his present position as President for North America of the Chamber of the Americas.

Dr. Conde is also a journalist that has published over a thousand articles and was recognized with the Hispanic Media 100 Award that placed him among the top one hundred journalists in the United States in 2002 and the Hispanic Media 50 Award in 2003. He was recognized for participation in the Colorado Governor’s Trade Mission to Mexico in 1999 and 2001. He has been honored for his work numerous times in the United States and Mexico where he received the Diploma Honoraria from the Law School of the Autonomous University of Mexico in 1984.

Dr. David Conde has made presentations, published books and articles in Latin American Literature including Argentina, Mexico, and Brazil, American Latino Literature and Latino Education.
