Captain Alfred Scott Mc Laren, USN (Ret.), has a diverse and extensive work experience. Captain Alfred Scott served as President of The American Polar Society since 2010. Prior to this, they were self-employed as an author, public speaker, and cruise ship speaker. Captain Alfred Scott has authored a book and has conducted numerous speaking engagements. Captain Mc Laren has also held various roles in The Explorers Club, including being the President from 1996 to 2000. Captain Alfred Scott has been a member of the Rotary Club of Boulder, Colorado since 2008. Captain Alfred Scott obtained their Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from United States Naval Academy in 1955. Prior to that, they completed their freshman year at the University of California at Los Angeles where they studied Physics and Naval Science. In 1967, they earned a Master of Science degree in International Affairs from The George Washington University. Captain Alfred Scott also attended the U.S. Naval War College during the same period, focusing on Naval Warfare, Staff Planning, and War Gaming. Captain Mc Laren pursued graduate studies in Chinese Government and Politics at Brown University from 1968 to 1969. Captain Alfred Scott later completed a Major Shore Commanders Course offered by the U.S. Navy in 1978, which focused on leading and managing a major U.S. Navy Shore Command. Continuing their academic journey, they earned a Master of Philosophy degree in Polar Studies from the University of Cambridge in 1983. Finally, in 1986, they obtained their Ph.D. in the Physical Geography of the Polar Regions from The University of Colorado. Throughout their educational pursuits, Captain Mc Laren has cultivated their expertise in various fields, ranging from engineering to nuclear power, environmental psychology, philosophy, international affairs, and the physical geography of the polar regions.
