Steven Lafer spent the past thirty years teaching English education and socio-cultural courses at the University of Nevada, Reno. Lafer earned his Master’s in the Teaching of Writing from Humboldt State University, taught at the high school level, and then returned for a doctorate in Education at the University of Oregon. Dr. Lafer’s research involves an examination of English language arts programs and the manner in which they may advance the empowerment of individuals through emergent literacy. Collaborating with Dr. Stephen Tchudi, Lafer developed the Truckee River Institute for teachers–discovering the techniques of localized interdisciplinary teaching through engagement in the process of localized interdisciplinary learning. A founding board member, he now more often enjoys biking, kayaking, and serving as the institute’s gadfly for engaged educational democracy in his bioregion.
