James Ward

James Ward has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. James began their career as a Technology Scholar at Cambridge Consultants, where they focused on medical device design, particularly inhalers and inhaler test rigs. James also had experience in mechanical design of production lines and manufacturing equipment.

Following this, James worked as an Engineer at SOFRACO Engineering Systems Pty Ltd, where they were involved in various mechanical design projects, including a refuelling at sea training rig for the Royal Australian Navy and the design and installation of an oily water separator.

Afterward, James joined Imperial College London as a Research Fellow, where they contributed to a research program on in-vitro diagnostic medical devices. This involved evaluating a range of devices and informing the development of guidance for the diagnostics industry.

James then moved on to Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where they held roles as a Senior Research Associate and later as a Principal Research Associate. During their time there, they conducted health system improvement projects, collaborating with NHS Trusts and working closely with professional bodies such as the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

In 2015, James became a founding cohort participant of the Health Foundation's Q Initiative, a community-focused initiative aiming to improve health and care in the UK. James also became involved with the University of Cambridge as a Healthcare Innovation Programme Course Director and Principal Research Associate, where they utilized human factors and systems engineering approaches to enhance healthcare design and worked on quality improvement projects with NHS partners.

Throughout their career, James has demonstrated a commitment to improving healthcare systems and devices through applied research and collaboration with various stakeholders.

James Ward earned their Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree in Engineering from the University of Warwick, where they studied from 1993 to 1996. James then pursued further education at the University of Cambridge, where they obtained a PhD in Medical device design verification from 1997 to 2002. In addition to their educational achievements, James Ward has also obtained several certifications, including being an NIHR Investigator from the National Institute for Health Research, a Chartered Engineer from the Engineering Council, an IEHF Associate Member from the Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors, and an IET Member from The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
