Earlier in Philip's career, significant positions were held at Bank of America from 1995 to 2002, and at CIBC from 1993 to 1995. Philip's educational background includes a degree in Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto and further studies at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB) has been serving the local banking community as an independent organisation in the provision of education and professional training since 1963.
