Mike Madey

VP, Business Insurance at The Horton Group

Mike Madey used to dream in German. A student of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, he left for West Germany to serve the U.S. Army during the culmination of the Cold War. For eight years, Mike worked in collaboration with the West German government in a criminal investigation unit that specialized in anti-terrorism, narcotics and fraud. Mike has found these experiences to be advantageous in his civilian career as a risk management professional.

“In Germany, our unit never made a decision in a vacuum,” Mike explained. “We had to be very candid with the situation at hand, address all the facts and work together to find the best resolution. This is clearly important in business as well.”

Mike came to The Horton Group in 1994 and has built some of the organization's strongest client relationships. In 2008, when The Horton Group combined its operations with Medical Arts Insurance (now Healthcare Practice) out of Lisle, Illinois, Mike knew his focus on medical malpractice insurance would be a great fit. He sits on numerous advisory boards, taking the concerns of Horton's clients and sharing them with decision-makers at major insurance carriers. “Although many people at Horton sit on advisory boards, we have zero favoritism when placing insurance. We maintain a very healthy environment here and feel obligated only to the best interests of our clients,” Mike said.

With clients ranging from hospitals to individual physicians' practices, Mike and his team have earned the trust of many business owners. He feels that Horton differentiates itself from the competition through the delivery of value-added services, such as safety consulting, claims advocacy and legal assistance.

“While publicly-traded brokers scale back their services to please shareholders, Horton continues to reinvest,” Mike concluded. “Clients who switch over from a publicly-trader broker usually say they don't feel like a number anymore. This is especially true of middle market companies. Horton simply understands their needs better.”
