Phil Stahel

Chief Medical Officer at The Medical Center of Aurora

Dr. Phil Stahel is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at The Medical Center of Aurora and Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital. Prior to joining The Medical Center of Aurora, Dr. Stahel was the CMO at North Suburban Medical Center from October 2017 through February 2020. He was the previous chair of the Orthopedic Department at Denver Health.

A triple-board-certified European trauma surgeon, Dr. Stahel trained at the University Hospital of Zurich and University Hospital of Berne, Switzerland. Dr. Stahel accomplished a research fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and worked as a trauma surgeon at Charité University Medical Center in Berlin, Germany. He is also a graduate from the HCA Physician Leadership Academy in Nashville, TN.

Dr. Stahel is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the open-access, peer-reviewed journal Patient Safety in Surgery and the editor of multiple textbooks in the field of patient safety, including “Patient Safety in Surgery” (2014), “Blood, Sweat and Tears – Becoming a Better Surgeon” (2016), and “Surgical Patient Safety: A case-based approach” (2018).

His hobbies include running, reading, writing, skiing, and sailing.

Dr. Stahel also enjoys playing the electric guitar and he is a proud inaugural member of the legendary HCA CMO rock band “Skyward” (2019).
