Immigration Reporter at Miami Herald

Syra O. is an experienced journalist currently serving as an Immigration Reporter at the Miami Herald since January 2022, while also contributing as a reporter for El Nuevo Herald and Miami Herald since June 2020, focusing on issues relevant to Puerto Rico and the Latino community during the 2020 election cycle. Syra O. was a Postgraduate Reporting Fellow with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting from September 2020 to September 2021, conducting an in-depth investigation into agriculture in Puerto Rico. Previous experience includes roles as Staff Writer, Podcast Coordinator, and Assistant Editor at The Philadelphia Citizen from October 2017 to June 2019, where Syra O. produced solutions-based journalism and co-created the CitizenCast podcast. In the early career, Syra O. was the creator and writer for "Las Voces de María," a multimedia project documenting the experiences of Hurricane Maria evacuees in Philadelphia. Syra O. holds a Master's degree in Journalism from Columbia University and a Bachelor's degree in History and English with a concentration in Creative Writing from the University of Pennsylvania.
