Joan Rohlfing has a diverse and extensive work experience. Joan served as the President and Chief Operating Officer at Nuclear Threat Initiative since 2001. Additionally, they were the Chair of the Laboratory Advisory Committee at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory - PNNL starting from 2021. Prior to that, they held the position of Member of the Threat Reduction Advisory Committee - TRAC at Defense Threat Reduction Agency from 2014 to 2019. From 1994 to 2001, Joan Rohlfing worked at the US Department of Energy as a Senior Advisor to the Secretary and Director of the Office of Nonproliferation, as well as Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Energy. Joan also gained experience at the US House of Representatives as a Professional Staff Member on the Armed Services Committee from 1991 to 1994. Lastly, they served as Assistant to the Director for Strategic Forces Policy at the Office of the Secretary of Defense from 1989 to 1991.

Joan Rohlfing pursued an education in the field of political science. Joan obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1984. Joan later pursued a Master's in Public Management degree with a focus on national security at the University of Maryland, where they attended from 1984 to 1986. In 1988, they spent a year at Stanford University, specializing in International Security and Soviet Studies.
