David Paterson

Non-executive Director, Finance And Audit Committee / Investment Committee at The R&A

David Paterson has a diverse work experience spanning various organizations and roles. David started their career as a Partner at Herbert Smith Freehills, where they worked from 1986 to 2017. During their time there, they also served as a Consultant from 2017 to 2018. In 2011, they joined Christian Aid Kenya as a Member of the Board of Trustees and later became the Chairman of the ITL Development Board. David held this position until November 2020. From 2016 to 2020, David was a member of the Financial Reporting Council, serving as an Advisory Panel Member and a Non-Executive member of the Case Management Committee in the Conduct Division. In 2018, they took on non-executive roles at The R&A as a Non-Executive Director and at The Fairtrade Foundation as a Non-Executive Director and Trustee. Additionally, they served as the Chair of the Nominations Committee at The Fairtrade Foundation. Currently, David Paterson is a Member of the Board of Trustees at Benefact Trust, where they started in 2022.

David Paterson attended the High School of Dundee from 1969 to 1982. Following their time there, from 1982 to 1985, they furthered their education at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law.
