Sandy Kyriakopoulos

A licensed psychologist and expert in early childhood and trauma interventions, Dr. Kyriakopoulos directs The Village’s programs for expecting and new parents, assessments of children, and mental health treatment for those affected by trauma.

She oversees programs supporting parents with infants and young children, including the Child First and Family Based Recovery programs. She also oversees the Mid-Level Developmental Assessment and early childhood assessment training inside The Village and within the community. Additionally, she oversees the Psychology Department, which is made up of the Psychology Internship program, the Psychological Evaluation Center and the Multi-Disciplinary Evaluation program – a comprehensive, trauma informed screening that looks at the physical, dental, developmental, behavioral and emotional health of a child. She coordinates Trauma Informed Child Parent Psychotherapy services.

“I hope that my contributions make a difference in the lives of children and families touched by The Village,” says Dr. Kyriakopoulos. “Sometimes that difference is large, but most of the times it’s small and unexpected. I always strive to be innovative and creative and help us “do better” for families. Staff training and mentoring is another huge goal of mine. I hope to build supervisors and leaders in child development and the mental health/human service field at The Village and beyond.”

Dr. Kyriakopoulos has over 10 years experience in managing outpatient mental health care settings. She continues to see clients in individual, family and group therapy on a limited basis.

Her recent presentations have included: “Children of Incarcerated Parents: Issues, Needs and Responses,” “Psychology and the Law Series: Police Psychology, Court Testimony, and Battered Woman Syndrome,” and “Evidence-Based Treatment Models for Use with Traumatized Children and Adolescents.”

Dr. Kyriakopoulos served as coordinator of the Central Connecticut Multidisciplinary Intervention Team for many years, helping integrate the efforts of agencies that investigate cases of criminal level child abuse. In that role, she organized statewide trainings on topics such as compassion fatigue, forensic evidence in physical and sexual abuse cases, and sexual victimization and sexual offending behaviors in youth.

She served as vice chair of the Connecticut Children’s Alliance, and on the advisory board for the Aetna Foundation Children’s Center at Saint Francis Hospital. Dr. Kyriakopoulos participates on the MDT evaluation committee of the Governor’s Task Force on Justice for Abused Children, and is a member of the Alliance for Bloomfield’s Children and Centering Pregnancy steering committee at Hartford Hospital.

Dr. Kyriakopoulos is an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford. She earned her doctorate in clinical psychology and her master’s in clinical practices from the University of Hartford, and a bachelor’s in psychology from the State University of New York.
