Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound School is a National and State Park located in the heart of the Boston Harbor Islands, With a 200-year legacy of serving children in Boston and a 48-year partnership with the Boston Public Schools (BPS), the Island is a beacon for experiential education, empowering young people through hands-on learning and skill building and outdoor adventure and exploration. We are a proud member of the network of 11 Outward Bound schools in the U.S., with a shared mission to change lives through challenge and discovery.

Education is at the forefront of our work.  Funded by a combination of philanthropy and a robust private events business, our outdoor educational programs are offered at no cost to families.

What is our mission and how do we achieve it?

Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound’s core mission is to build stronger, more equitable school communities by delivering free experiential learning programs that boost academic success and foster personal growth. Our research-based programs blend STEM, social-emotional, and challenge-based learning, giving students a unique opportunity to build life skills alongside academic ones.

Whom do we serve (students, clients, customers)

We offer programs for Boston Public School middle school and high school students, fee-for-service programs for school and youth groups, and leadership development programs for professionals. We also fund our transformational programs by hosting private and corporate events and weddings.

What is the OPPORTUNITY?

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Development Manager will drive day-to-day operations for the Development Team, donor visits and the Corporate Volunteer Program.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Engagement Events and Activities 

  • Manage and support the execution of stewardship and cultivation events, including, but not limited to, managing bulk mailings, organizing event materials (nametags, registration lists, etc.), and assisting with event set-up and on-site registration.

  • Manage the logistics of donor site visits from start to finish. This includes researching ideal on Island days for visitors, scheduling boats, meals, and golf carts, coordinating with on-Island staff, communicating with donors in a clear and informative manner, preparing materials, and conducting post-visit follow-up.

  • Serve as contact and support for Boston Marathon runners. Manage key relationships with Boston Athletic Association.

Corporate Volunteer Program (CVP)  

  • Serve as primary relationship contact with each CVP partner, managing all communications with volunteer groups from solicitation through volunteer day to ensure they have everything they need to make the day a success.

  • Create and manage booking of all volunteer days in CVP Calendar, TripleSeat, Development Calendar, Raiser’s Edge and forecast document.

  • Communicate the volunteer schedule in coordination with the island maintenance staff, Programs Department and Corporate Volunteer Coordinator(s), and Development Team.

  • Ensure all volunteer days are adequately staffed and a consistent, safe and effective program is executed.

  • Manage all vendor relationships associated with volunteer program, including securing in-kind donations.

Chief Development Officer Support 

  • Manage administrative items for the Chief Development and Communications Officer, including donor meeting scheduling and follow-up, tracking donor meeting outcomes in RE, scheduling internal, external, and interdepartmental meetings, and any other support as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 4 years of varied Development experience
  • Four year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to identify and prioritize important tasks
  • A demonstrated ability to build rapport with colleagues and work as an effective team member in a diverse community· Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Understanding of and willingness to exemplify the core values and mission of the organization
  • Field experience in outdoor / experiential education, preferably Outward Bound a plus

LOCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

This position reports to both Mainland and Island offices, as well as hybrid style work. Hours are more variable during the height of the season, and will include occasional nights and weekends, while allowing for a more regulated schedule and additional flexibility during the “off season.”

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

·        Work environment is dynamic and fast-paced. Work may include time spent outside in inclement/harsh weather, sitting at a desk 6+ hours per day, etc.

·        Commute includes a 25 minute boat ride to and from Thompson Island

·        Employees who are able are encouraged to participate in loading/unloading supplies (varying weights up to 45lbs) for CSIOBS from the MVOB when appropriate.
