Damien McCotter

Damien McCotter has a diverse work experience in the legal field, with a focus on technology and intellectual property. Damien currently works as the Legal Counsel, Canada and Privacy Lead, General Counsel Centres of Excellence at Thomson Reuters. In this role, they are responsible for software and content licensing, commercial contracting, privacy and intellectual property matters, and providing legal support for the development and delivery of new technologies.

Prior to Thomson Reuters, McCotter served as the General Counsel at Think Research, a digital healthcare company. Their responsibilities included identifying commercial opportunities, developing technology roadmaps, business plans, and legal frameworks.

Damien also worked at The Hospital for Sick Children as the Director of Legal Services (Research) and Legal Counsel, Intellectual Property. In this role, they provided legal guidance on commercialization, intellectual property, and licensing, and worked directly with researchers and business development professionals.

Before joining Think Research and The Hospital for Sick Children, McCotter was a partner at McCotter Law Office, where they provided legal services to technology clients and supported clients in construction and land development sectors. Damien was also an associate at Torys LLP, specializing in technology law and intellectual property litigation.

McCotter's early work experience includes positions as a Summer Associate at Cooper & Dunham LLP, a Student-at-Law at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, an Intellectual Property Manager at the National Microelectronics Research Centre, an Engineer at Semiconductor Insights, and a Research Engineer at the Optoelectronics Research Centre.

Throughout their career, McCotter has gained experience in various aspects of law, including licensing agreements, intellectual property portfolio management, patent infringement investigations, and research and development.

Damien McCotter attended Queen's University from 1993 to 1997, where they obtained a B.Sc.Eng in Materials & Metallurgical Engineering from the Faculty of Applied Science. Damien then pursued a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B) at the University of Windsor from 2001 to 2004. Additionally, in 2003-2004, Damien was awarded a Faculty of Law Guest Student Scholarship at Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen.
