Babak Safavieh

Babak Safavieh has an extensive work history in research and development, with a focus on the medical and healthcare industry. Babak currently holds the position of Director of Research at Tides Medical, where they began working in 2023. Prior to this, they were the Manager of Research and Development at Tides Medical, starting in 2022 and holding the position until 2023.

Before joining Tides Medical, Babak founded and served as the CEO of a stealth startup in 2021. Babak also worked at United Therapeutics Corporation from 2017 to 2021, starting as a Mechanical Engineer and progressing to the position of Principal Mechanical Engineer. At United Therapeutics, they managed a team and contributed to various projects.

Babak's career also includes experience as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School from 2015 to 2017, where they worked on developing low-cost flexible electronics platforms for pathogen detection and assays for early kidney failure detection. Babak also developed a cell phone-based assay for HIV monitoring treatment.

Prior to their time at Harvard Medical School, Babak worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Brigham and Women's Hospital from 2014 to 2015. Babak also served as a Research Scholar at Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) from 2010 to 2015, where they specialized in developing electrochemical biosensors and microchips for bacteria detection and quantification.

Babak began their career as a Research Engineer at McGill University in 2009.

Babak Safavieh's education history begins with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Chemical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, where they studied from 2001 to 2006. Babak then pursued a Master of Science (MSc) in Chemical & Biological Engineering from the University at Buffalo, completing their studies between 2006 and 2008. Finally, Babek earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Material Science from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique, where they studied from 2010 to 2015.
