Gary Hannagan

Gary Hannagan has extensive experience in law enforcement, primarily in the Town of Chelmsford. Gary has held various roles within the police department, starting as a Patrolman in 1999 and progressing to become a Detective and then a Sergeant. In their role as Sergeant Special Services, they worked closely with the Lieutenant to oversee and deploy various specialized units, such as the Motor Unit, Bike Unit, Traffic, Marine Division, and Community Services. Gary also established a Problem Orientated Policing (POP) Unit during their time in this division.

In addition to their work in the police department, Hannagan has taken on leadership positions outside of their regular duties. Gary served as the President of the Chelmsford Police Athletic League, a non-profit organization run by Chelmsford Police Officers that provides various programs and events for the community. Gary also served as the Vice President of the Chelmsford Police Department K9 Unit Foundation.

Hannagan has contributed to the professional development of law enforcement personnel through their roles as an Academy Instructor at the Methuen Police Academy, where they taught various subjects such as felony stops and active shooter training. Gary also served as a Defensive Tactics Instructor for the Massachusetts Police Training Commission.

Currently, Hannagan serves as the Deputy Chief of Police for the Town of Chelmsford. Gary has been in this role since June 2023. Prior to this, they held the position of Police Lieutenant and was responsible for overseeing and managing police operations. During their tenure, they implemented a Field Training program, which had been discontinued for several years.

Furthermore, Hannagan has been involved in the accreditation process of the Chelmsford Police Department as an Accreditation Team Assessor.

Gary Hannagan began their education in 1991 at Chelmsford High School. Gary obtained their High School Diploma in 1994. Following this, they attended Umass Amherst from 1994 to 1998, where they earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in Criminal Justice. In 1999, Gary completed their training at the MCJTC Lowell Police Academy. Most recently, in 2021, they attended Northwestern University's School of Police Staff & Command Class #496.
