Rick MacDonald has a diverse work experience spanning several roles and positions. Rick started their career as a Brinks Armored Car employee from 1984 to 1989. Following this, they served as a Harbor Point Housing Police officer from 1989 to 1996. In 1997, Rick joined the Town of Pembroke as the Chief of Police, where they held multiple responsibilities such as overseeing uniform patrol, safety, honor guard, and special events management. In 2009, they briefly worked as the State HRA for the MA Air National Guard before taking on the role of MA Air National Guard State Command Chief in 2012. As the State Command Chief, Rick provided leadership to the enlisted forces and acted as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Adjutant General and Chief of Staff.

In terms of specialized courses and programs, Rick participated in various leadership and security-related programs. In 2006, they completed the Chiefs Executive Course in Washington, DC. In 2007, they attended the Anti-Terrorism Officer Level II course in Pease, ANGB, New Hampshire. The following year, Rick completed the Cultural Leadership Lab in Smithfield, Rhode Island. In 2008, they attended the Air Force Combat Command School in Lackland AFB, Texas. Rick also completed the Chief's Leadership Course at Maxwell AFB, Alabama in 2010. Later in 2011, Rick participated in the Human Resource Advisor Course HRA in Selfridge, Michigan.

Further strengthening their knowledge and experience, Rick enrolled in the Harvard Kennedy School in 2013 for the Leadership in Homeland Security Executive Program. That same year, they also completed the Command Chief's Orientation Course at Lackland AFB, Texas, where they received specialized training as a Senior Enlisted Advisor for the MA Air National Guard. In 2014, they attended the Harvard Kennedy School's Leadership in Crisis/Executive Program.

Rick's commitment to further education continued in 2016 when they participated in the Homeland Protection Course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In addition to their education, Rick also obtained the Command Chief's Orientation Course certification from Lackland AFB, TX, serving as a Senior Enlisted Advisor for the MA Air National Guard.
