Aldous Birchall

Aldous Birchall has extensive experience in the field of data science and finance. Aldous is currently the Chief Data Scientist at Trafigura, a position they have held since January 2020. Prior to that, they worked at Accenture as the Principal Data Scientist for the UK & Ireland from October 2018 to January 2020. Before joining Accenture, Birchall served as the Director of Financial Services AI & Head of Data Science (UK) at PwC UK from May 2016 to October 2018.

In 2015, Birchall founded London Data Science, a consulting company specializing in machine learning and quantitative finance applications for hedge funds and start-ups. Aldous held the position of Founder/Director until April 2016. Prior to founding their own company, Birchall worked as a Portfolio Manager at Millennium Management from March 2014 to September 2015, where they applied machine learning and statistical quant approaches to credit and macro strategies.

From August 2011 to December 2013, Birchall served as the Head of Systematic & Quantitative Credit Trading at Nomura, managing a proprietary quantitative trading team. Before joining Nomura, they worked as a Portfolio Manager at Caxton Associates from October 2009 to April 2011, where they developed and managed a hybrid quant and fundamental strategy.

Earlier in their career, Birchall held positions at RBS as the Head of European Macro Credit Trading and Head of Loan CDS Trading from February 2005 to October 2009. Aldous also worked at Morgan Stanley as a Corporate Bond & Credit Derivatives Trader from May 2003 to February 2005, and at J.P. Morgan as a Quantitative Research Analyst in Hedge Fund Strategies from June 2000 to May 2003.

Aldous Birchall has a diverse education history. Aldous received a MSci degree in Physics from Imperial College London from 1994 to 1998. Later, they pursued a Dip Psych (Open) degree in Psychology from The Open University between 2006 and 2013. Aldous also obtained additional certifications, including a Machine Learning Engineer Nanodegree from Udacity in 2016 and an Artificial Intelligence Nanodegree from Udacity in 2017. Aldous expanded their knowledge by completing a Machine Learning course from Coursera in 2015. Aldous is currently in the process of obtaining a MSc degree in Machine Learning and Data Science from Imperial College London, starting in 2021 and expected to finish in 2023. Additionally, they hold two certifications: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2019 and Quantum Machine Learning (UTQML101x) from the University of Toronto in the same year.
