Deborah Bryan had an extensive work experience in the non-profit sector. Deborah began their career in 1990 as the Director of Program & Government Relations for the American Lung Association of North Carolina. Deborah then went on to become the President & CEO of the American Lung Association in NC, where they focused on organizational leadership and strategic planning. Deborah also held the roles of NC State Executive and Regional VP of Advocacy & Donor Value for the American Lung Association of the Atlantic Coast. Deborah Bryan also worked as a Health Outreach Consultant for the NC Sierra Club and as a Clean Air Act Contractor for the Environmental Defense Action Fund. Deborah served as the President & CEO of Action for Children NC and also volunteered for Wake County Public Schools and Transitions LifeCare, formerly known as Hospice of Wake County.

Deborah Bryan's education history includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which they obtained between 1969 and 1972. Deborah pursued further education at East Carolina University from 1977 to 1979, where they earned a Master's degree in Education-Admin & Supervision. Later, in 1994 and 1995, Deborah attended Duke University and received a certification in Non-Profit Management.
