Thomas Szabo

Thomas Szabo has had a diverse and extensive work experience in the traffic engineering field. Thomas currently serves as the Chief of Traffic Group at TranSmart since 2023. Prior to that, they held various leadership positions at the Illinois Section ITE, including Immediate Past President, President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Director - Activities Group. From 2014 to 2023, they worked as a Senior Project Manager at Christopher B. Burke Engineering - Chicagoland, where they managed various traffic engineering projects, led new business development efforts, and provided general traffic engineering consulting. Previously, Thomas worked as the Traffic Section Manager at Kane County, Illinois from 2001 to 2014, and as a Construction Project Manager at the same company from 1993 to 2001, supervising construction projects, preparing bid contract documents, and managing consultant services. In 2022, they also served as the Chair of the Nomination and Awards Committee at ITS MIDWEST.

Thomas Szabo attended Elgin Community College from 1993 to 2003, where they studied Applied Science in Engineering. Thomas did not obtain a degree during their time there. In terms of additional certifications, they obtained the following: Traffic Signal Operations Specialist (TSOS) from the Transportation Professional Certification Board/Institute of Transportation Engineers in 2009, Traffic Operations Practitioner Specialist (TOPS) from the Transportation Professional Certification Board/Institute of Transportation Engineers in 2007, Signs and Markings Senior Technician, Level III from the IMSA-International Municipal Signal Association in 2014, Traffic Signal Senior Field Technician, Level III from the IMSA-International Municipal Signal Association in 2015, and Road Safety Professional 1 (RSP1) from the Transportation Professional Certification Board (TPCB) in August 2020.
