Michael C. Morgan

Chairman & CEO at Triangle Peak Partners

Michael C. Morgan is a co-founding partner of Triangle Peak Partners, LP and serves as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Since 2004, he has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Portcullis Partners, LP, a private investment partnership and one of Triangle Peak’s largest Limited Partners

Mike currently serves on the boards of three public companies navigating the transition to a more sustainable energy future. He is the former president and current lead director at Kinder Morgan (NYSE:KMI), one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America. He is a current director and former lead director of Sunnova (NYSE:NOVA), a leading residential solar and energy storage company. He also serves as director of Stem (NYSE:STEM), which combines advanced energy storage with a world-class AI-powered analytics platform.

He joined Kinder Morgan at its founding in 1997 and headed Kinder Morgan’s corporate development efforts until 2001, completing 23 acquisitions worth over $5 billion. He then served as President of KMI until 2004. In 2006, he participated in the management buyout of KMI and then its return to the public markets via IPO in 2011. During that period, KMI grew from 150 employees to over 10,000 and from $300mm of enterprise value to over $70bn. Mike has served continuously on the board of KMI and its predecessors since 2003.

Mike previously served on the boards of four public companies: as chairman of Star Peak Energy Transition Corp. (NYSE:STPK) until its $1.3bn merger with Stem, and as chairman of Star Peak Corp II (NYSE:STPC) until its $1.7bn merger with Benson Hill, a sustainability-focused food technology company. He also served as a director of two public energy funds affiliated with Kayne Anderson (NYSE: KYN and KYE).

Mike is a frequent volunteer at Stanford University, currently serving as the national chair of The Stanford Fund, and as co-chair of the advisory council for the Precourt Institute for Energy. In addition, he serves on the DAPER Fund and the Stanford LEAD Council. He has previously served on the GSB Management Board, the Undergraduate Cabinet, and the Parents’ Advisory Board. Mike co-chaired the development committee for his 20th, 25th and 30th reunions. In recognition of his service, Mike received the Stanford Associates Governors’ Award.

Mike earned an MBA from Harvard Business School and both a BA in Economics and an MA in Sociology from Stanford University. He previously served as an Adjunct Professor in the Practice of Management at the Jones School of Business at Rice University.
