U.S. Naval Institute
Tom Cutler has a diverse and extensive work experience. Cutler started their career in 1965 in the US Navy, where they served as a Lieutenant Commander until 1990. During their time in the Navy, they served in various roles in aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, and patrol craft, including support operations during the Yom Kippur War and an in-country tour in Vietnam.
After leaving the Navy, Cutler joined the US Naval Academy in 1981 as the Associate Chairman of the History Department and Seamanship and Navigation Department. Cutler held this position until 1990.
In 1990, Cutler founded the Walbrook Maritime Academy and served as its Director until 1997. Following that, they joined the Naval War College in 1991 as a Fleet Professor, teaching Strategy & Policy and Strategy & War at the US Naval Academy and other locations.
In 1997, Cutler joined the US Naval Institute as the Director of Professional Publishing, where they also worked as a Senior Acquisitions Editor. Cutler remained in these roles until 2016 when they became the Gordon England Chair of Professional Naval Literature at the US Naval Institute.
Throughout their career, Cutler has gained expertise in professional naval literature, teaching strategy and policy, and acquiring books for publication.
Tom Cutler received their Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography from Towson State College, where they studied from 1965 to 1969. Cutler continued their education by pursuing a Master of Arts degree in History at Norwich University, where they studied from 1987 to 1989.
