After serving for three years, they joined the Miami Police Department in 1979 and worked their way up to the position of Assistant Chief of Police. In 2001, they moved to the Miami Beach Police Department, where they held the positions of Assistant Chief of Police and later became the Chief of Police until their retirement in 2014.
