Esther Mertens is an accomplished independent consultant with extensive experience in climate mitigation and nature-based activities. Currently engaged with Lief Consulting since June 2024 and as an independent expert for UNFCCC since October 2016, Mertens has contributed to greenhouse gas inventory reviews and assessments of forest reference levels. Mertens has held significant roles, including Regional Associate Director at South Pole, focused on European climate projects, and consultant roles at FAO, GIZ, and the Coalition for Rainforest Nations, emphasizing MRV systems and GHG inventory development. Mertens holds a Master's degree in Biological Engineering from KU Leuven and participated in an Erasmus program at Warsaw University of Life Sciences.
