Heimata Louisa Karika is a seasoned environmental professional currently serving as the Regional Liaison Officer - Asia Pacific at the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) since January 2021. Prior to this role, Heimata held multiple positions at the Cook Islands National Environment Service, including Deputy Director and Manager of the Island Futures Division, where management of sustainable initiatives was a key focus. Additional responsibilities included coordinating the GEF/UNDP Sustainable Land Management Project and the National Capacity Self Assessment Project for the Cook Islands. Heimata's educational background includes a Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate in Ridge to Reef Sustainable Development from James Cook University, a Post Graduate Diploma, and a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Biological Sciences from The University of Auckland.
