Angeli Achrekar is an accomplished public health professional currently serving as the Assistant Secretary General and Deputy Executive Director of Programs at UNAIDS since January 2023. Prior to this role, Achrekar worked at the U.S. Department of State for over a decade, holding several key positions including Principal Deputy US Global AIDS Coordinator and Acting U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, where responsibilities involved leading global health diplomacy efforts. Achrekar also played a significant role in the Saving Mothers, Giving Life initiative as a Senior Public Health Advisor, aiming to reduce maternal deaths through innovative partnership strategies. Earlier experience at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention included oversight of global HIV/AIDS operations and initiatives to enhance adolescent health. Achrekar holds a PhD in Public Health from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and an MPH in Global Health and Epidemiology from the Yale School of Public Health.
