Umunyana Rugege

Umunyana Rugege is an experienced legal professional specializing in human rights, currently serving as the Head of Human Rights at UNAIDS since March 2023. Prior to this role, Umunyana held various positions at SECTION27 from April 2010 to March 2023, including Attorney, Deputy Director, and Executive Director of SECTION27, incorporating the AIDS Law Project. Umunyana began a career as an Associate in the Public Interest Law Department at Webber Wentzel from January 2006 to April 2010 and previously worked as a Project Coordinator for the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) between January 2000 and July 2001. Umunyana's educational background includes a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Cape Town, a Master of Environmental Management from Cornell University, and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University at Buffalo.
